Raila’s Controversial Statement On Christianity Sends Atheists Into Jubilation

Date:

The Atheists in Kenya have expressed their satisfaction with ODM leader Raila Odinga’s recent remarks on Christianity.

In a meeting with the Muslim community this week, Raila had said that he will end the notion of  Christianity being the greatest religion in the country once he becomes the head of state.

“There is a colonial ideology in Kenya that elevated Christianity above all other religions. My government will end that. Kenya is a secular society and we will respect all religions,” Raila said.

His remarks did not sit well with most Kenyans including religious leaders who have not shied away from condemning him on social media.

In a statement, Harrison Mumia, the President of Atheist in Kenya, however welcomed Raila’s statement noting that Christianity was “a justification that European powers used to colonize and Exploit Africa thus leading to the undermining of African culture.

“For a long part of our history, African traditional religion and indigenous cultures were seen as inferior, barbaric, and backward. It is time we reformed our education system so that future generations can appreciate African traditional religion and culture as part of our history,” Mumia said.

Mumia went ahead to remind political party leaders that Kenya is a secular state.

“Freedom of conscience and belief is enshrined in our Constitution (Article 8 & 32). Citizens have the right to believe or not as they wish, and to fulfil the requirements of their beliefs individually or collectively, provided they are not infringing on the rights of others,” he added.
