Scientists have developed a new phone application that can be able to detect whether one has covid-19 or not.
According to Daily mail, the smartphone app known as ResApp uses a machine to analyze the sounds of a person’s cough.
The App was tested on 741 patients. It managed to detect the virus in 92% of the participants. The tests were carried out in India and USA and out of the 741 people, 446 had covid-19.
Before the tests on the App, participants were first subjected to a survey on any symptoms that they were experiencing. They would then cough into the phone that had the application installed.
The App was further tested to confirm if it can also detect other respiratory infections. 1007 cough samples were tested including asthma, pneumonia and respiratory tract infections. It was however established that the App detects Covid-19 at a 90% accuracy.
“We are very excited about these preliminary results for detecting Covid-19 using cough audio recorded on a smartphone,” Tony Keating, ResApp the CEO and managing director.
This comes at a time when most countries are relaxing the stringent measures that had been put in place to curb the spread of the virus that shook the world especially in 2020.
