Tough Questions Raised By Moses Wetang’ula On President Kenyatta’s Impeachment That Prove It’s Another Political Game

Date:

Bungoma senator Moses Wetang’ula has rubbished claims that DP William Ruto had planned to impeach president Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to Wetang’ula, the remarks by the head of state are shocking and at the same time embarrassing because he is a symbol of stability and hope for millions of Kenyans.

“Yesterday I was shocked and also embarrassed to see in the media that his excellency the president is alleging that his deputy attempted to impeach him. This is disheartening because the president is a symbol of national unity, security, stability and is the beacon of hope for the people of this republic,” the Ford Kenya leader said.

Wetang’ula questioned when the president was aware of  the impeachment plans that he referred to as sinister.

He further said that the impeachment process is clearly defined in the constitution and there was no way the Deputy President would have done that ‘behind the scenes’.

“We are seasoned legislators, the process under our constitution of impeaching anybody is very clear and Kenya has no secrets and if there was any attempt to prepare an impeachment against the president. This would have been an open secret,” he noted.

Wetang’ula went on to state some of the processes that an impeachment goes through before it is successful.

“Mr. President, apart from crying wolf, who drafted the motion? What was the head of the motion? In which house was this motion supposed to originate? Because under the constitution, the motion would have gone to the National Assembly where it would have been debated and if it is passed it comes to the senate as the trial chamber,” he said.

He also asked about the charges that the president was being accused of for him to be impeached.

“What were the charges? Because an impeachment is not a voice vote in a house of parliament. It has to detail the charges being preferred against the head of state and once it is passed in the National Assembly, the trial chamber, which will sit like the high court full with those prosecuting you, your defence team of lawyer and your accusers, who was doing all these?” the lawyer asked.
