DP William Ruto led United Democratic Alliance (UDA) failed terribly in their poorly scripted PR stunt on democracy.
UDA wanted Kenyans to believe that their party is in support of democracy by ensuring that Ruto does not get a direct ticket even though it was clear to everybody that he was the one who would be flying the party’s flag in the August 9 general elections.
This can be judged from how the party has been carrying out their campaigns since its formation after Ruto fell out with president Uhuru Kenyatta.
The interviews for the presidential nominations were conducted on Saturday morning and DP Ruto qualified for the position unmatched.
23-year old Tracy Wanjiru, a student at the JKUAT and Jephnei Orina, who had also expressed interests in being nominated were however disqualified over lack of fees and academic papers.
It is evident that UDA just used the two individuals to achieve their democratic goal for their own selfish gains because the two would not have been called for the interview in the first place if they did not meet qualifications.
Furthermore, why would Tracy be called for the interview yet her age does not allow her to vie for presidency. According to the constitutions only persons above 35 year of age are eligible to vie for presidency.
She was also disqualified over lack of the fee yet she is a person with disability. She was not supposed to pay the required amount. UDA was charging Kshs1 million for candidates seeking the presidential candidature.
On the other hand, Jephnei had petitioned to have the nomination fee waived because Kshs1 million seemed too much for a hustler like him. He was however scrapped off the nomination list probably before his petition was looked at.
Kenyans have bashed DP Ruto and his UDA team for being hypocrites.
“Why would someone present himself/herself for presidential candidate interview knowing very well s/he doesn’t meet the academic threshold and fee for application, that was pure coverup in the name of democracy. Shame on you @WilliamsRuto @UNITEDDEMOCRATI,” Odoke Odongo said.
“Ruto is using this strategy to cover the eyes of the youth by pretending to be democratic towards them by giving them a chance,” Woud Nyakach claimed.
“U are kidding me. I thought that there were basic qualification requirements which would include academic and fee but they qualified for the interview without these two only to be disqualified. What a joke!” Emmanuel Lutta said.
