Boda boda riders can now breathe a sigh of relief after DCI announced that the nationwide crackdown has been suspended.
In a statement on Saturday, DCI said that the crackdown has been stopped to allow the government to come up with the implementation framework of the same.
“Enforcement of compliance of traffic law by public transport motor cycles aka Boda boda crackdown has been stopped. This is to give room to the government to reorganize the sector through a multi sectoral committee working on a framework of implementation,” said DCI.
However the ban on boda boda riders operating in Nairobi’s Central Business District remains in force.
“The ban on boda bodas operating within the Nairobi CBD remains strictly in force. All boda bodas operators and riders are advised to comply with all requirements in due course,” DCI further said.
A number of netizens however question why DCI was discriminating against operators around CBD.
“Hao wa cbd hawahitaji chakula ama? Wacheni mambo ya divide and rule,” read a comment on DCI’s tweet.
“Where does CBD extend to? Because we know you guys,” another user stated.
The manner in which police have been handling boda boda riders after president Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the nationwide crackdown has been widely condemned by several leaders who say that innocent boda boda riders do not have to pay for the ‘sins’ of a few rogue ones.
““There was an incident in Nairobi where a woman was attacked by Bodaboda operators, we must all condemn such. If someone makes a mistake that is a criminal and they should face the law. Let not all the riders be made to pay for the crime of others,” Raila said recently.
The crackdown also led to the disruption of smooth operations along Thika super highway on Wednesday this week as the riders staged demonstrations to protest on how police were mistreating them.
The move came into force after a devastating video of an UN agency female worker in the hands of boda boda riders went viral. It is alleged that she was involved in an accident along Wangari Mathai road that was previously known as Forest road and that is why the rowdy boda boda riders pursued her.
