It is just less than 6 months to the next general elections and a number of politicians including women have already made public their intentions of vying for various positions.
Right from the MCA position to the gubernatorial one, this political season has witnessed a rise in the number of women who want to be part of the country’s leadership.
However, no woman has expressed interest in vying for Presidency but according to reports, 23 women have their eyes on gubernatorial seats.
Among the 23, here is a list of Women Reps who want to compete for the seats in the August 9 General elections
Glady Wanga
The Homabay Women Representative recently launched her gubernatorial bid seeking to succeed governor Cyprian Owiti. She was elected to parliament in 2017 under the ODM party ticket.
She is expected to face former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero, Suba South MP John Mbadi and others who are yet to launch their bid in clinching the ODM ticket.
Mwangaza Kawira
She is the current Women Rep of Meru and is seeking to replace governor Kiraitu Murungi who will also be defending his seat.
It is however not clear which political party she will be using to pursue her ambitions.
Janet Ong’era
The current Kisii Women Representative hopes to be the next governor as James Ongwae’s term comes to an end in August.
Ongwae has served in the position since 2013 and was elected on an ODM ticket.
Ong’era wants to vie for the seat on an ODM ticket as well but she will have to beat Sam Ongeri during party nominations.
Florence Mutua
Mutua has served as the women Representative of Busia County since 2013 and now wants to take over as the county boss.
She hopes to take over from Sospeter Ojamong’ whose term of service is also coming to an end.
The same position is being eyed by Deputy governor Moses Mulomi, Paul Otwoma, Nambale MP John Bunyasi among others.
Pamela Odhiambo
The Migori Women Representative is seeking to succeed governor Okoth Obado, who has been serving in the position since 2013.
She intends to vie for the position on an ODM ticket.
“I want to say it clearly and for the record, I have the governor seat ahead of me which I will follow directly. I will vie to be the governor,” she said in the past.
Soipan Tuya
Tuya has served as the Women Rep of Narok County for two terms. She now wants to succeed Samwel Ole Tunai and has promised to take the county to greater heights if the locals will consider her for the position.
“The people of Narok are ready for women leaders. Those who are still opposed to women are after selfish interests, they are opposing women for political expediency,” she said in an interview.
