All public servants and state officers including Cabinet Secretaries are supposed to take their leave from their official duties before February 9, 2022.
According to the constitution, the officials are supposed to resign from their positions six months to the next general elections so that they can have time to campaign.
This week has seen a number of civil servants tender their resignation and below is the list of Cabinet Secretaries who have quit their work to vie for various political posts.
Adan Mohammed
Mohammed has been serving in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet for the past 9 years in various ministries until Tuesday February 8 evening when he tendered his resignation.
He is seeking the Mandera gubernatorial seat in the coming elections.
“I take this opportunity to thank HE. The President for the confidence he bestowed on me over the last nine years in his Administration across the Ministries of Industry & Trade, Agriculture and finally at East African Community & Regional Development.
“To the Great People of Mandera County, change is coming and in a big way. I Look forward to serving you as your next Governor. Inshallah,” he said via a tweet.
John Munyes
Munyes has also resigned as the CS of Petroleum and mining to pursue the Turkana gubernatorial seat that is currently being held by Josephat Nanok.
Before landing the Cabinet Secretary position, Munyes served as the Turkana county senator after the 2013 general election. He was elected under the Ford Kenya ticket.
He also served as the minister of labour during president Mwai Kibaki’s reign.
Charles Keter
At the time of his resignation, Keter was serving as the minister of Devolution. He will be contesting for the Kericho county gubernatorial seat that is currently being held by Paul Chepkwony, who is on his final term.
Keter has also served as the minister of Energy under president Kenyatta’s administration before being transferred to the Defence ministry.
“I am riding on my experience as Cabinet Secretary, long political experience and first knowledge of my people and home.” the CS said as he announced his resignation on Tuesday while in Nairobi.
Several Cabinet secretaries are who have also expressed interest in politics and are expected to resign before the end of Wednesday, February 9 include Treasury CS Ukur Yattani who is eyeing the Marsabit gubernatorial seat, Water and Sanitation CS Sicily Kariuki who is believed to be going for the Nyandarua gubernatorial seat and Agricultural CS Peter Munya who is set to contest for the Meru gubernatorial seat.
