Aspiring Politician Wants Kenya Power To Compensate Kenyans Over Power Blackout

Date:

Nairobi’s aspiring politician Alinur Mohamed now wants Kenya Power to compensate Kenyans for damages caused by the extensive power outage in the country.

The politician-cum businessman wants the power supply agency to compensate power consumers for what he calls frequent outages that the country experience.

“Kenya power should compensate consumers for financial losses, equipment damage, physical injuries and death due to these frequent blackouts,” he said.

Alinur’s statement comes after Kenya Power announced an extensive power outage in the country following a collapse of a high voltage electricity line connecting Kiambere to Embakasi in Nairobi.

The power outage happened at about 10:50 am on Tuesday.

“Our engineers are working to restore electricity supply as the repairs are being undertaken,” Kenya Power said in a statement.

Alinur has, however, claimed that the outages are a punishment to Kenya insisting that the company needs to be punished.

He further demanded that the State should, instead, transfer the management of the power company to the Kenya Defence Forces.

Although the company said power supply had been restored in Nairobi, West Kenya, North Rift, South Nyanza and Central regions by afternoon, damage had already been done, with critical service providers reverting to back-up generators or closing their businesses.

In a statement, Kenya Power said the Suswa-Embakasi power transmission line that evacuates power to Athi River, Embakasi and City Centre developed a sustained fault in the evening.

“This has resulted in a power outage affecting sections of the Nairobi Central Business District, Embakasi, Kilimani, Hurlingham, Syokimau, Athi River, Kitengela, Mlolongo and adjacent areas,” said the statement by Kenya Power last evening.
