Noah Ogweno was trapped inside the Kapuodho gold mine in Rongo, Migori county from Thursday last week to Sunday before he was finally pulled out.
The 23-year old reported to work as usual on Thursday January 6, at around 2 pm but even before 30 minutes could pass, the mine collapsed on top of him.
Ogweno was trapped underground without food and water and he also had not carried his cellphone because of poor network, thus making it difficult for him to communicate with the people who were on the ground.
“I could hear people talking outside the gold mine from where I was, I was safe but they could not hear me,” he said in an interview with The Standard.
Now that he could not speak to those who were outside, Ogweno decided to pray asking God to keep him alive and also repented his sins.
“I started praying and asked God to preserve my life. I also repented my sins and made a vow I would serve God if He rescued me,” he said.
After the long wait, he was rescued alive from the mine on Sunday afternoon and rushed to a hospital in Kisii. It was established that he was in good condition but only that he was fatigued due to lack of food and water.
The 23-year old who is an orphan said that he would not return to the mine. He believes that God was communicating to him through the experience.
He however called upon the government to provide miners with modern equipment and safety gears.
“I am appealing to our government to provide modern equipment and safety gear to the miners to enhance their safety,” said Ogweno.
