Gikomba Market Burns For The Sixth Time In A Span Of Two Months

Date:

Gikomba market has once again gone up in flames on the morning of Saturday, December 18, 2021.

This comes just two weeks after another section of the market was burnt on November 28. A video shared on YouTube shows traders trying to rescue some of their belongings.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established but firefighters and emergency response teams rushed at the scene in a bid to contain the situation.

Police investigated the scene to determine what might have caused the fire.

This was the sixth incident of fire at the market within a period of 2 months. The fire comes just days after the County Government of Nairobi unveiled plans to install CCTV cameras and build a call center at the market.

In the 2022 Policy Budget Statement, Treasury CS Ukur Yattani said that the effects of the fires at Gikomba market are not only felt by traders but the whole country in general.

“Fire outbreaks that have constantly evolved in the Gikomba market of Nairobi County have posed a threat to the economic well-being of thousands of self-employed traders. In the past decade, the Gikomba market has reported cases of fire outbreaks that have constantly been linked to arson attacks as opposed to natural occurrences,” the CS said.
