Deputy president William Samoei Ruto on Sunday got the opportunity to interact with the first family of Mama Ngina Kenyatta during the Jamhuri day celebration.
The two had shared a podium at the historic Uhuru Gardens along the Lang’ata road which had been closed for several months.
However, one of the notable things at the historic event was when deputy president William Samoei Ruto went to say hi to the former first lady Mama Ngina.
Having been at the fore-front of bashing the first family by referring to them as selfish dynasties, many expected Ruto to put on a brave face after he came in contact with Ngina Kenyatta.
However, DP Ruto from the facial expression appeared not only shy but also became humble before Mama Ngina who sat comfortably on her chair while giving DP Ruto a sharp look in the eyes.
Further, Ruto’s reaction also attracted the attention of the hawk eyed security guards and the people at the back who could not take their eyes off him. Clearly, they had also been amused by how the DP suddenly coiled his tail and became humble.
Since the onset of the handshake, William Ruto has never had a soft spot for Kenyatta family, Moi Family and Oginga family. On several occasions, the deputy president has bashed these families while insisting that Kenya does not need to be led by dynasties.
So serious has the narrative been that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leader and his allies coined the “hustler” term just to isolate the so-called dynasties.
While speaking in Kakamega sometime in September this year, Ruto alleged without evidence that the dynasty families had teamed up to lock him out of his 2022 presidential ambitions.
“Now, they have teamed up to lock me out of the presidency, claiming my father was a nobody in Kenya. Even the kid of a single mother can become President in this country. Let them go away,” said Ruto who had for the longest time banked on this dynasty vs hustler narrative to favor him.
In the meantime, there was a protocol hitch when President Uhuru Kenyatta invited Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga to speak after Deputy president William Samoei Ruto during the Jamhuri day.
This move by president Uhuru to invite Raila Odinga after his deputy Ruto during a national holiday like Jamhuri was seen by majority of the people as an indirect endorsement of the opposition leader to take over from him.
This is the last Jamhuri day president Uhuru is presiding over as the head of state before he officially exits the presidency after the August’s 2022 general election.
The Jamhuri day celebration brought together a number of leaders such as the wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former chief justice David Maraga, former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko amongst other notable figures.
