UON Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama Faces Possible Jail Term

Date:

University of Nairobi (UoN)Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama might be jailed for six months over Contempt of court.

Kiama is set to know his fate on whether he will be handed a fine or jail term come January 27, 2022.

He is accused of failing to stop the restructuring process of the senior management at UoN even after the court ordered that the process should be stopped.

The judgement will be delivered by Judge Maureen Onyango of the Employment and Labor Relations Court Judge.

Kiama ignored suggestions from the Education CS George Magoha who demanded that the radical governance reforms should be revoked at the institution.

Universities Academic Staff Union moved to court regarding the issue, a move that saw the court rule in their favor.

According to the union’s lawyer Titus Koceyo, those who were appointed in UON’s new management structure have occupied the offices despite the court’s order to suspend their appointment.

“Already, the illegally and unlawfully appointed staff in non-existent positions have begun issuing directives, memos and performing their roles, yet their occupation of the said positions have been stayed by the court,” Koceyo told the court.

Kiama restructured UoN’s management over claims that the old structure was inefficient and high expenditure.

In the process, he abolished the five offices of Vice Chancellors and replaced them with two associate vice-chancellors.
