Kisumu residents were on Tuesday treated to a rare drama after armed robbers attacked Equity bank located at the busy Ang’awa area.
From the video in possession of Sonko News, the locals took to their feet as security forces exchanged gunfire with the robbers who had taken control of the Equity bank at Ang’awa.
“Equity Bank Kisumu Ang’awa Street Kisumu under siege. Armed robbers holding staff hostage. Police officers responding with Gun Fire ??” Reported one Mr. Zack familiar with the incident.
According to Sonko News reporters based in Kisumu, the armed robbers were still at the bank at the time of delivering the news to our major offices.
“Thugs entered the bank and we do not know what is happening. All I know we have just heard gunshots and up until now, they are still inside the bank,” a witness said.
As a result, the rescue operations were taken over by the Nyanza Regional Police commander Karanja Muiruri.
Witnesses further disclosed that the roads near the facility were sealed off with security being beefed up around the area.
Equity bank has been a victim of robbery with violence in the country, something which has made many people wonder how safe the institution is.
Three months ago, armed robbers attacked Equity Bank Matuu Branch, Machakos County in the mid-morning hours with reports indicating that three armed robbers stormed the bank in the 15-minute daring robbery.
Sources which spoke to Sonko News stated that the three robbers managed to disarm the police officers that were manning the facility.
