Reckless matatu driver caused the deaths of four family members including a lecturer at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) – Karen Campus.
32-year-old lecturer Evelyn Waithera was behind the wheel when the vehicle she was driving collided head-on with a matatu at Kamirithu area in Limuru along Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Waithera perished alongside her sister Rhoda Njeri, 40, parents William Kamau, 77, Jane Njoki, 69, in the horrid Monday November 1st accident.
Another passenger – the lecturer’s male – cousin survived the accident but sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the PCEA Kikuyu Hospital.
The survivor, a youthful man, is a university student. The lecturer’s elder sister Rhoda Njeri was an employee of a private hospital in Murang’a Town.
The accident happened when a matatu driver who was speeding tried to overtake another vehicle leading to a head-on collision with the saloon car ferrying the five family members.
The five were en route to Nakuru from Nairobi. They were to attend the burial of Evelyn Waithera’s in-law in Nakuru.
The death of the KMTC lecturer was announced by the principal on social media who expressed utter shock at her sudden demise.
Good evening members, it is with deep sorrow I announce the demise of madam Evalyn Kamau – examination officer at KMTC – Karen Campus. She was involved in a road accident along Nakuru – Nairobi highway at around 10 am today. She was together with her both parents and a sister who passed on too. The bodies have been transferred to Montezuma funeral home in Thika.

The victims’ relatives back in Kiharu, Murang’a County are now planning the burial of the four, whose bodies were moved to the Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home in Kabati, Murang’a.
The family of late mzee William Kamau, a former employee of Kenya Power, is survived by three sons, Anthony Irungu, Muturi Kamau and Maina Kamau.
