IEBC Ordered To Extend Voter Registration Period

Date:

The High Court in Eldoret has ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission To extend voter registration by one more week.

This is due to the pending hearing and determination of a petition filed by a voter from Uasin Gishu County.

Justice Eric Ogolla ruled that the exercise that was to end on Tuesday, November 2 should now end on November 9.

According to the petitioner Patrick Cherono, the commission is far beyond attaining its target hence the need for the extension.

Slightly over 800,000 voters registered during the first three weeks of the exercise. IEBC had targeted to register over 6 million Kenyans by the end of the exercise.

The low numbers have been attributed to the general lack of motivation and lost Identity Cards.

Members of Parliament have also called upon the electoral commission to extend the registration period since 4.5 million Kenyans are yet to register.

Rarieda Member of Parliament said that curfew that was recently vacated was among reasons why Kenyans had not registered as voters especially those in urban areas who have to travel to their home areas to register.

“With the removal of curfew, it is befitting that they extend the registration process,” Omollo said in a rally.
