Government Hospitals In Nairobi Fail To Hit Revenue Collection Target

Date:

Nairobi County government hospitals have fallen short of their yearly revenue collections by not hitting the 192.8 million mark.

The four – Mama Lucy Kibaki, Pumwani Maternity, Mbagathi, and Mutuini – managed to collect Sh107 million from departments against a target of Sh192.8 million in the financial year ended June 30, 2021.

The low revenue collections by the four Nairobi county hospitals have been necessitated by a number of factors that are mainly attributed to the management.

For example, Mama Lucy hospital, among the other three mentioned hospitals, sere the largest number of people. The facility is situated in the expansive and overcrowded Eastern part of Nairobi County.

Just a year ago, a number of cases of neglect at Mama Lucy hospital were reported – where even loss of lives was witnessed due to neglect by the staff. Other ills that have been the unending story at the Kayole-based medical facility lack of drugs.

In the new report on their inability to hit the revenue target, the hospitals look to be facing another problem that could only turn out to be disastrous – should it be compounded by the perennial staffs’ negligence on patients at various hospitals.

According to the figures contained in the Nairobi County Annual Development Plan for the financial year ending June 30, 2023, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital – which serves a population of more than 2.1 million residents – posted the worst revenue collection dip by realizing Sh42.2 million against a target of Sh120 million.

On the other side of town, Eastleigh-based Pumwani Maternity Hospital realized Sh4.4 million in the financial year under review, against a projection of Sh7 million, a drop from the Sh8.1 million realized in the previous financial year where – the hospital surpassed its target by more than Sh1.5 million – busting the Sh6.5 million target.

It is only Mbagathi Hospital that came closer to its annual target by collecting Sh60 million against a target of Sh62 million – in sharp contrast with Mutuini, which just managed a measly Sh494, 699 against a target of Sh3.8 million.
