Kenya Uganda Fish Row Escalate As Kenyan Delegation Storm Out Of Meeting

Date:

A meeting between Kenyan delegation and their Ugandan counterparts ended prematurely after the Kenyan team decided to walk out.

This after the two teams failed to reach an agreement concerning the fish trade at the meeting held on Tuesday October 19.

The meeting had been organized so that the standoff on fish trade that had been impounded by the Ugandan nation could be brought to an end.

Ugandan authorities allegedly impounded four tracks of fish from Kenya enroute to  Democratic Republic of Congo over claims that the fish were premature.

Kenyan officials led by  Ambassador Julius Kiema Kilonzo  stormed out of the meeting that was  chaired by the Uganda State Minister for Fisheries Hellen Adoa.

The Kenyan officials complained of being harassed by the neighboring country as they walked out.

“We are tired. Very tired,” one of the  Kenyan delegates was heard saying.

“Our consignment is rotting for over three weeks. You had an intention of selling our fish, you go ahead and do that,” another delegate shouted.

The officials further blamed their Ugandan counterparts for giving wrong information to their government.

“The information they are giving the State Minister for Fisheries is wrong. It’s totally wrong to claim that our fish is immature,” the delegate added.

The two countries have been at loggerheads over the fishing business with Kenyan fishermen being arrested by the Ugandan authorities from time to time.

Days ago, 36 fishermen were released by the Ugandan authorities after being detained at Lolwe island over allegations of trespassing when fishing in the lake.

The fishermen from Suba North and Suba South constituencies in Homa Bay were arrested near Ringiti Island in August. One of them was shot dead.

According to the Homabay County Commissioner, the fishermen were released after a successful negotiation between Kenyan security officials and those of Uganda.
