Prime Suspect Agnes Tirop’s Murder Arrested While Fleeing To A Neighboring Country

The husband of the 5,000m World record holder Agnes Tirop has been arrested by the police as he tried to flee to a neighboring country.

Ibrahim Rotich was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa county on Thursday night.

“The prime suspect in the gruesome murder of 25-year-old world 5,000m record holder Agnes Tirop, has been arrested,” the police report reads.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Rotich was trying to evade justice.

“Ibrahim Rotich, who was in a relationship with the athlete was arrested moments ago in Changamwe, Mombasa county, as he tried to flee to a neighboring country to evade justice.
Rotich is believed to have killed the two-time World Athletics championships bronze medallist,by stabbing her before going into hiding,” DCI said.

DCI further said that the suspect  hit a lorry on his way to Mombasa as he tried to make his escape.

“Earlier in the day at around noon, Rotich had rammed his getaway vehicle into a lorry at Mlolongo, along Mombasa road, as he desperately escaped our dragnet,” DCI stated.

The suspect is currently being grilled by detectives at Changamwe police station for more details into the murder, before being arraigned in court to answer to murder charges.

Agnes was found dead at her Iten home on Wednesday October 13 in the morning with visible stab wounds on her abdomen.

This is after her father filed a missing report on Tuesday when they could not trace her whereabouts.

“On Tuesday night Agnes’ father reported her missing at the Iten Police Station. Police immediately commenced investigations to trace her whereabouts,” said Keiyo North Police boss Tom Makori.

“Between eight and 9am the following day, the two families were startled when the athlete’s husband called his parents saying he had committed a heinous crime and sought God’s forgiveness,” the police boss added.
