New details have emerged about the couple who went missing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while they were heading to Iran.
Stella Waithera and her husband Ahmed Golabi went missing on Friday September 24 from the airport after a short stay in the country.
It has now emerged that the couple was arrested by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).
According to Stella’s father, Samwel Njunue they received information that their kin were taken by the ATPU.
“Even though it was the ATPU who arrested them, why can’t the police tell us? Why are they keeping it a secret? Why can’t they bring them to justice and indict them instead of keeping them incommunicado?” he wondered.
He accused the police of violating their rights by denying them access to a lawyer as well as means of communication.
The couple visited the country on September 19 to check on Stella’s ailing father at Gatanga in Murang’a County.
Before they went missing, they stayed with the family up to around 6.30 pm then travelled to Lang’ata in Nairobi where they stayed with Stella’s sister.
They were later taken to JKIA by the sister and a friend at 1 am to wait for their flight to Iran that was to take off at 4 am.
Both the Turkish airlines and Iranian Embassy confirmed that they never boarded the plane.
Since then the family has not heard from them as their phones were switched off.
“Despite our numerous visits to JKIA, both the police and the management have not been of any help to us. They have only been taking us in circles,” Stella’s father told the media.
Through their lawyer Stephen Kangahi, the family has moved to court to compel the government to release their kin.
The family is also pleading with members of the public to share any information that may lead to the couple’s whereabouts.
