Key Suspect In Monica Kimani Murder Burnt Evidence On The Night She Was Killed

Date:

The High Court was informed that Jowie Irungu, the key suspect in the murder of Monica Kimani, burnt some evidence on the night the businesswoman was killed.

According to a witness, Brian Kasaine, Irungu called him on Whatsapp at 2am on September 20, 2018 asking for something flammable like paraffin or air freshener.

“I told him I did not keep such things in my house. I asked what he wanted to do with paraffin and if he had a stove but he said he wanted to burn some stuff,” Kasaine said.

Kasaine was a friend and neighbor to the former TV anchor Jackie Maribe and Irungu at Royal Park estate in Langata.

He said that he knew Irungu via Instagram and had become close in February 2018.

A day later Kasaine went to Jowie and requested for a car to pick his son from school.

“Irungu was wearing a white vest and grey sweat pants. He was in deep thought and distracted. I noticed he was not his usual self as he looked very disturbed in mind,” Kasaine testified.

He asked him what the paraffin was for however Irungu’s response shook him.

“I was with Mo yesterday for an assignment and he stabbed somebody,” Irungu allegedly told Kasaine.

He further said that Irungu told him he had used an air freshener to burn some things at a garden across their house.

On September 21, 2018 at 1 am, Kasaine was alerted by some noise at his gate. He went to check what was going on since the person was persistent.

“I walked to the gate and heard a scream, like someone in agony. I found Irungu lying in front of my gate bleeding. I asked him what had happened and saw his upper left chest area bleeding heavily,” he said.

Maribe told him that Irungu had shot himself.

“Irungu started shouting at his fiancée Maribe saying, ‘You want me out of your house, it’s fine, bury me in Langata.’  Maribe did not answer him,” he added.

Irungu allegedly told Kasaine to go to the house and pick the gun that he had shot himself with.

“On entering the house, I saw a blood trail leading to the master bedroom. In the room, there were bullets scattered on the floor and a firearm. Upon checking the firearm, I realised it was mine,” said Kasaine.

Kasaine told the court that previously, Irungu had borrowed his gun without ammunition so that he could sharpen his skills since he was also a licensed gun holder but his gun had some defects at the time. He however failed to return the gun

That morning, Irungu was taken to Lang’ata hospital but they were referred to Nairobi West Hospital.

“He could not be admitted since we did not have Sh50,000 deposit. He was attended to and we left,” Kasaine said.
