South Korea might soon ban the consumption of dog meat while the demand of the meat in the country continues to decrease in the recent years.
President Moon Jae-in has raised the possibility of banning the consumption of dog meat during a meeting with the prime minister.
He questioned whether it was time to prudently consider a ban.
President Moon is a known dog lover and he was addressing the issue of banning consumption of dog meat totally for the first time.
He made the comments when he was being briefed on new the measures to protect abandoned animals in the country.
There is already a law in place banning the cruel slaughter of dogs and cats, but consumption itself is not banned.
Reports indicate that most of the Koreans have never eaten dog meat but about one million dogs are still slaughtered yearly for food.
A study in 2020 shows that 84% of the citizens have never consumed dog meat and do not wish to do so in future. The study also revealed that 59% support the ban on consuming dog meat.
Most of South Koreans are said to have shunned from eating dog meat amid a growing trend of keeping animal as pets.
As a result, three of the largest dog meat markets in the country have closed been closed.
