Nelson Havi Decides To Honor His Late Parents By Challenging TSC’s New Directives

Date:

Law Society Of Kenya President Nelson Havi has decided to come to the aid of teachers regarding the TSC’s new directives.

This comes a few days after he declined to file a petition on behalf of teachers on the new directives that require them to undergo fresh training and renew their certificates.

“Teachers, you left Wilson Sossion to be fought to exhaustion by the state, KNUT withdrew all cases against the state when you replaced Sossion with a Secretary of ‘your preferred choice’. Please, stop calling me to challenge the directive by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that you be trained afresh,” Havi said in a statement.

However on Sunday, Havi changed his tune revealing that he was going to defend the teachers in honor of his parents who were both teachers.

“After reflecting on what would have been good for my late father and my mother, both of whom were great teachers, I have changed my mind. I will act for teachers to challenge the oppressive Teacher Professional Development Programme imposed by the TSC. Let us get started,” Havi posted on his twitter account.

TSC directed that all the 340, 000 on its payroll should undergo fresh training and renew their certificates after every five years.

TSC announced on Wednesday September 22 that the training will be undertaken under Teacher Professional Development Programme.

The teachers will be required to pay Kshs6, 000 for each module. The training will be in six modules.

According to the TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia, the plan will ensure that teachers are respected just like other high valued careers such as doctors while keeping up with the professional trends.

The training will be offered in four certified institutions which include Kenyatta University, Riara University, Mount Kenya University, and Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI).
