Today, Kariobangi residents took to the streets to demonstrate against evictions that left over 7,000 residents homeless. The residents burnt tires on the road and barricaded the Outer Ring Road, making it impassable for motorists.
In a video circulating on social media, residents expressed their displeasure at the government’s decision to evict the residents in the area.
“We woke up very early in the morning to vote for you President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. Where will we go? We do not even have food to eat and instead, the government demolishes our houses. We want you to come to Korogocho and address this issue,” an elderly woman demanded.
“Right now, the country is grappling with the Coronavirus pandemic. They have told us not to go to work, they have evicted our houses, where do they expect us to live? We have small children and elderly women, where will we take them?” another woman questioned.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has since indicated that a number of lawmakers will visit the area and distribute food to the eviction victims.
