A group of men stormed Akidiva Memorial Hospital in Migori and attempted to free their wives who had been detained at the facility.
The women were detained at the hospital after failing to pay for their babies’ delivery. Apparently the women were supposed to pay their bills with their insurance cover- Linda Mama which is under the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Linda Mama basic health services package, which targets pregnant women and infants with an aim of facilitating access to quality and affordable health services, has been temporarily halted.
The women detained at Akidiva Memorial Hospital had no idea that Linda Mama service had been halted, and were shocked when the hospital demanded cash payment instead.

The hospital demanded Ksh 30,000 for cesarean delivery and Ksh 10,000 for normal delivery. Close to 15 mothers and their newborns are being held at the facility weeks after delivery for failing to pay the amount.
The women’s husbands united in their frustrations stormed the hospital in a bid to free their detained wives.
The men accused Akidiva Memorial Hospital of colluding with other private hospitals to overcharge patients after services at Migori County Referral Hospital were affected by doctors’ strike.
The irate men told the press that the hospital detained their wives yet they were not informed of the technicalities surrounding the Linda Mama and NHIF cards at the time of admission.
Some even claimed that the hospital informed them that NHIF and Linda Mama cards would cater for all their wives’ bills when they were admitting them at the facility.
