KRA To Reward Tax Cheats Whistleblowers

Date:

Kenya Revenue Authority has come up with a web-based anonymous reporting system that allows citizens to report tax evaders and corruption-related malpractices at their conveniences.

The new system gives full anonymity to their former since it has an auto-generated identity that enables the informer to log in and not only report but also follow up on the progress of their report.

Before the introduction of the system, the informer had to provide information through emails, phone calls, and walk-in. At the same time, it did not allow for anonymity and efficiency.

The taxman loses millions in revenue due to tax evasion annually. The new initiative implies that all tax evasion and corruption-related lacunas are sealed and revenue is not lost through unscrupulous people.

The new system is aligned to the authority’s seventh corporate plan on enhancing revenue mobilization via robust intelligence collection as well as risk profiling.

There is a way to entice members of the public to report tax evasion such as an individual’s failure to pay taxes including income tax, Pay as You Earn (PAYE), Income Tax among others. Reports on tax fraud such as when a business or an individual willfully and intentionally falsifies information on a tax return to limit the amount of tax liability will also be rewarded.
