Nigeria Police Chief Order Anti-Riot Unit To Deploy Nationwide

Nigeria’s police chief has ordered for nationwide deployment of anti-riot officers as protests triggered by police brutality spiraled out of control.

The police spokesman said in a statement that the anti-riot offers were being deployed “to protect lives and property of all Nigerians and secure critical national infrastructure across the country”.

The anti-police brutality protests in Nigeria shows no sign of coming to an end anytime soon despite announcements of reforms by the government.

The demonstrations that erupted this month were initially focused on abolishing the federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) – accused of unlawful detention, extortion, and extra-judicial killings.

The government announced that the unit would be dissolved but thousands of youths have remained out on the street pushing for genuine change in the police post.
