Policeman Shot Dead By Fellow Officer While Rescuing Suspect

Date:

A police officer was shot dead by a fellow officer in Busia county under unclear circumstances.

Police Constable Francis Kalewa was shot in the right side of his back before the bullet exited through his chest on Friday night at around 10 pm.

That night village elder Pamela Atieno reported to the local station that residents were planning to lynch a 26-year-man alleged to have stolen motorcycle parts from bodaboda operators.

Constables Kalewa among other officers rushed to the scenes to rescue the suspect.

As the officers were bundling the suspects into a waiting police vehicle, residents began stoning the policemen as they tried to take the suspect from the police custody.

“The officers were forced to fire in the air to scare the rowdy mob,” says a police report filed at the Busia Police Station on Friday night under the OB Number 91/16/10/2020.

“As they (police officers) were approaching the station, it was noted that Constable Francis Kalewa was bleeding. He was taken to the Busia County Referral Hospital, where it was established that Kalewa had sustained a gunshot [injury] in the right side of his back,” adds the report.
