China’s Military Targeting Kenya

Date:

The United States says China will soon have a military base in Kenya and other African nations.

According to a report by the Pentagon, China is targeting military logistics in various countries in a quest to build and sustain its military power around the world

According to the report the People’s Republic of China is eye countries such Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Seychelles, Tanzania, Angola, and Tajikistan as locations for PLA (People’s Liberation Army) military logistics facilities.

The US claims China could begin talks with countries like Kenya on establishing the outpost.

Kenyan military is yet to respond to the claims brought forward by the Pentagon.

“The PRC has probably already made overtures to Namibia, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. Known focus areas of PLA planning are along the SLOCs (Sea Lines of communication) from China to the Strait of Hormuz, Africa, and the Pacific Islands,” said the report.

The report said the goal of China is to leverage its new military to achieve its foreign-policy objectives and to assert itself globally.

The report comes amid China’s plans to implement the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative that aims to strengthen trade between Beijing and African countries including Kenya.

Through the initiative, China has been funding billions of shilling worth of infrastructure in Kenya.

But the US has increasingly been local in urging Kenya to be cautious of the heavy borrowing warning that it can saddle with unplayable debts to China for the projects built largely with Chinses labor.

Beijing first opened its military base in Djibouti in 2017 where Chinese Navy Marines were deployed along with armored vehicles and artillery support.

Analysts have previously viewed the move by China to set up a military base in Africa as its geopolitical ambitions overseas.
