Masten Milimu Wanjala killed 13 children and was also lynched – two circumstances that pose a difficult challenge for him to be accorded a normal burial in Bukusu traditions.
The 20-year-old confessed to killing 13 children after sexually molesting them and drinking their blood when he was arrested by police.
Wanjala was killed after escaping from Jogoo Road Police Station were he had been detained as police conducted investigations before he could arraigned him in court.
The self-confessed child serial killer returned home in Bungoma county after escaping only be be lynched by an irate mob that cornered him on October 15th.
Bukusu elders have since issued tough conditions that have to be met before the self-confessed child serial killer is buried.
Elders wants Masten Wanjala to be buried at a river bank to prevent bad omen. A relative identified as Isaac Misiko revealed that this will prevent the family from being haunted by evil spirits.
The elders explained that Masten Wanjala killed innocent children and as such he can’t be buried at his father’s compound as per the Bukusu tradition.
Burying him near the river shows that the family and the clan want to completely forget about him and his evil deeds.
Wanjala’s body is also to be buried in the dead of night. According to the elders, this will help avert evil spirits. It will also be done as per the norms and traditions of the Bukusu clan.
Special Bukusu rituals will be performed before Wanjala’s body is buried. The elders say that this will exorcise the evil spirits that could haunt the family later.
According to the elders, the ritualist will “engage” Wanjala in a conversation and splash concoctions at the family’s home.
The person who will perform the ritual will walk out of the compound without looking back. The ritualist will also be given a bull.
