Three people who visited Marathon record holder Kevin Kiptum days to the tragic accident that claimed his life have been arrested.
The three were arrested in Elgeyo Marakwet on Wednesday and detained at Kaptagat police station until 11 am after being positively identified by Kiptum’s father Samson Cheruyiot.
The police are however yet to get hold of the fourth man.
Sub-county Commander, Keiyo South Abdullahi Dahir, who confirmed the arrests added that the three suspects are currently enroute to County Criminal Investigations Officer, Elgeyo Marakwet for further questioning.
Dahir also noted that the police were not aware of their visit before Kiptum’s further spoke to the media.
Their arrest comes after Cheruiyot called upon the police to investigate them, as they had decline to give their identities.
He said that they visited the athlete’s home in Chepsamo village, Kaptarakwa ward, Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
“There are people who came home a while back who were looking for Kiptum but they refused to identify themselves. I asked them to provide identification, but they opted to leave. It was a group of 4 people,” the distraught father said.
Kiptum was the only child of his parents as doctors had advised them not to get more children due to health issues.
He died at the age of 24, alongside his coach, leaving behind his two children and his wife.
“We had good plans, he even planned to take me with him for the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14 this year,” the widow sad in an interview.
On Sunday, just hours to his death, Kiptum had planned to take his family out, but the plans were cancelled after he complained of a headache
