ODM leader and Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga has appointed 7 members to form a panel that will assist in selecting his running mate.
This was announced through a statement that was read by Azimio’s Secretary general Junet Mohamed on Wednesday April 27,2020.
“The panel members are; Bishop Peter Njenga, Archbishop Zaccheus Okoth, Senator Enock Wambua, Michael Orwa, Noah Wekesa, Sheik Mohammed Khalifa and Beatrice Moe,” Junet said.
The panel is expected to reach its decision through consensus and it will as well appoint the chairperson. Elizabeth Meyo will be the team’s secretary.
The panel will be guided with a number of core principles, including fidelity to the constitution so as to come up with the best candidate/candidates.
“In undertaking this solemn task, the panel shall be guided by the following core principles; fidelity to the constitution of Kenya, with particular emphasis the qualification of the nomination of the deputy presidential candidates,” Junet said.
Another guideline is that the panel should come up with an individual/individuals who demonstrate the will to serve the people rather than ruling them.
“Eligible candidate must demonstrate in word and deed that nomination to the high office of the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya, is a public trust to be exercised in a manner that demonstrates respect for the people, brings honor to the nation and dignity to the office, promotes public confidence and integrity of the office and demonstrates value that nomination to the office is a responsibility to serve the people rather than the power to rule them,” Junet said.
Finally, the eligible candidates should demonstrate the principles of leadership and integrity.
“In addition, the eligible candidate must demonstrate in word and deed, fidelity to the following principles and guidelines of leadership and integrity; personal integrity in public and private life, previous public service or private affair objectivity and impartiality in decision making and in ensuring that decisions are not influenced by nepotism, favoritism other improper motives or corrupt practices,
“Selfless service based solely on the public interest demonstrated by honesty and execution of public duties, the declaration of any personal interest that may conflict with public duties, accountability to the public for decisions and actions and discipline and commitment to the service to the people,” the statement further read.
The panel is expected to provide name/names of the suitable running mate to Raila for consideration before May 10, 2022.
