Three out of four fishermen have been rescued alive from the Indian ocean after 22-day ordeal.
The group of fishermen were left stranded in the ocean after their boat capsized, drifting them in a foreign fishing vessel.
Blue Economy CS Salikm Mvurya said that investigations are underway to establish how the fishermen ended up in a foreign vessel.
“We have received three among the four fishermen who got lost in the Indian ocean 22 days ago. They are safe but we are still searching for their colleague. I also want to praise our maritime security and all the stakeholders who were involved in the rescue operations,” the CS said.
He further said that families of the three survivors would be taken through counselling.
At the same time, he urged fishermen to be careful to avoid such occurrences.
“My ministry will also enhance its resolve to continuously create awareness and empower coxswains to ensure they have basic safety as they venture into the sea,” Mvurya added.
Akid Iddi Mohammed, one of the survivors was filled with emotions after being brought to the shore by the Kenya Coast Guard service ship MV Doria.
He affirmed that the ordeal was very traumatizing.
“Alhamdulillah! I just want to go home and reunite with my family. It is the most traumatizing ordeal,” he said. “I don’t know how we stayed alive for 22 days.”
