2 Killed, 3 Go Missing In Baringo Mudslides

Date:

Two people have been reported 3 while three others missing after mudslides rocked Saimo Kipsaraman area of Baringo North.

According to locals, mudslides were witnessed because of heavy rains.

Bodies of the deceased have since been retrieved and transfered to the Kabarnet county referral hospital.

Meanwhile, a search for the missing persons is ongoing.

“It was raining heavily when the incident occurred. The deceased, one from Kapkombe and the other from Kapchebogel were in the house when they met their death,” said Mary Rono, a resident.

Transport activities along the Tenges – Kabarnet road have also been paralysed following a mudslide that occurred at Sigowo area at night.

Two weeks ago, a landslide was witnessed in Kemungur near Kabasis area, prompting the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) to close the road.

Residents have also been advised not to use the road at nights and early mornings to avert disasters occasioned by trees that continue to fall.

Cases of rocks falling from hills have also been witnessed in Sacho and Kiptagich areas, a situation that has caused fear among locals.

“Stones are now falling from the hills because of the rains and we are now living in fear. We are ready to move to safer grounds but we dont know where to go. Things could worsen as the rains continue and we are asking the government to urgently intervene,” added another resident, Maria Sogomo.

The Kenya Meteorological Department announces that rainfall is expected to continue over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, North-western Kenya, the Rift Valley and the Coast in a forecast covering August 6, 2024 to August 12, 2024.
