A handful of Nairobi nightclubs have been known to collude with criminal elements to rob unsuspecting clients by spiking their drink with the infamous “mchele”.
Clubs and criminals are now working in cahoots to steal from revelers, and one of their favorite strategy is using drugs which have a stupefying effect on anyone who takes the drink laced with them.
In Kenyan lingo it is known as “mchele”. It is now a trade executed flawlessly and with military precision by twilight girls.
Victims of “mchele” fund themselves in very unfamiliar quarters, some raped while others lose everything they own.
It has emerged that the “mchele” used is a drug called Rohypnol also referred to as flunitrazepam – which should ideally be used for treating severe insomnia for a short duration (since it is addictive).
Higher doses of the drug can result in excessive sedation and finally a coma. Adverse effects include confusion, speech impairment and loss of balance.
Victims do not recall much of what happens when drugged and that is why it is popular in cases of sexual assault and robbery.
Rohypnol alias “mchele” comes in pill form and can be crushed into powder. People who use the drug on unsuspecting victims often place either the pill or powder into a drink because it dissolves quickly and has no smell or taste.
Many people who observe a person who has ingested Rohypnol will assume that the person is simply drunk as a result of consuming excess alcohol.
The more developed and urbanized a town is, the higher the risk of coming across these little devils in your drink.
Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisii, Nyeri and other parts of the country have all at one time raised a red flag over the increase in these cases.
The latest incident was reported in Mombasa on October 9th where a gang of women spiked alcohol belonging to Kisumu County officials.
The men, who are said to be senior officials at the physical planning department in Kisumu County, were reportedly enjoying their drinks at a restaurant when they were approached by the women.
18 nightclubs in Kasarani area of Nairobi are now set to be shut down following increased cases of clients being robbed after being drugged with “mchele”.
