The continuous fight between Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has cost Knut teachers privileges that their colleagues in Kuppet will enjoy after receiving fatter paycheques this month.
Thousands of teachers in Sossion-led Knut are still reeling in shock after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) denied them promotions and salary increase for the second year running.
47,131 Teachers in job group B5 have been promoted to job group C1 using their employer’s Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) while 32,556 teachers missed out on the promotion after the TSC said they fell under the Schemes of Service since they are members of Knut.
The Scheme of Service contained wit the Code of Regulations and Code of Conduct and Ethics for Teachers, is the preferred promotion way of Knut but it has been frowned by TSC.
In the disagreement on promotions that soured relations between Sossion and TSC, and the teachers seem to be the pawn in the high-stakes battle.
TSC through its communication director Beatrice Wababu said that further 32,041 teachers in job group B5 did not qualify for the promotion.
The teacher’s employer was expected to promote more the 100,000 teachers in job group B5, who were P1 teachers and promote them to Job group C1.
The promoted teachers are either Kuppet members or do not belong to any union leaving out Knut members.
The promotions and salary increments are the final fulfillment of the Sh54 billion Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was signed between the two teacher’s union and the TSC.
Mr, Sossion has accused the TSC of managing its employees through “blackmail and corruption” and has called for adherence to strict terms of the code of regulations, the TSC Act, and the CBA.
“The illegal, discriminative and blatant abuse of teachers’ constitutional rights is the highest form of unfair labor practice that violates all ILO conventions, standards, and treaties,” he said.
“The aim is to permanently kill Knut and silence its members once and for all.”
According to Sossion, his union will never be intimidated through blackmail from effectively performing its labor mandate.
“We shall give proper direction in due course, but urge our members to remain calm since the money has been appropriated by Parliament to pay all teachers,” Sossion said.

TSC decision followed a contested interpretation of a court ruling in a case TSC had filed against Knut to forestall a teachers’ strike.
Although the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled in favor of Knut, its members have significantly lost financially.
This has resulted in a mass exit of teachers from Knut to Kuppet as others opted to remain unionless
