The coronation of DP William Ruto as the Kalenjin Kingpin has now been put into question after a section of Talai Elders claimed the traditional ceremony was illegal.
According to the Talai elders, the ceremony was done by young men which is contrary to the clan’s traditions.
The elders also added the young men who performed the ritual did not consult the Kalenjin elders and declared the whole ceremony to have been done against the law of the land.
The way the ceremony was conducted is also said to be wrong. According to the elders during the ceremony honey was used contrary to the tradition.
“We are not against the coronation that was done at Kapsisiywa, but we are against how it was executed, for instance, there is not use of honey when the leader is dressed with the Sambut,” Stephen Sugut, one of the elders told a local broadcast station.
This comes just a week ago when The Talai Council of Elders denied the claims that the man from Sugoi visited them early Friday morning for a traditional cleansing and sought a special power to top the current purge in the Jubilee Party leadership.
According to the chairman of the traditional council of elders, retired Anglican cleric Rev. James Baasi, Ruto visited Kapsisiywa village in Nandi County to attend an abdication and accession ceremony where he was appointed as the Kalenjin kingpin after the death of former President Daniel Arap Moi.

Rev. Baasi also revealed that the traditional ceremony only lasted for an hour and was blended with strong Christia symbols and prayers.
“According to Kalenjin tradition, one would naturally abdicate the enthronement upon their demise. After Moi’s death, the royal regalia now needed a suitable successor to be handed over to through a legitimate ceremony.
Friday’s ceremony was however an abridged version blended with strong Christian/biblical symbols and prayers,” said Rev. Baasi.
Rev. Baasi maintained that the clan is not associated with sorcery and witchcraft as earlier claimed and therefore it was an event ordained by the Christian values.
The elders said Ruto was adorned with Kalenjin’s leadership attire and was also given Kumiat (honey) and a Kalenjin bible.
Leaders present at the occasion included; Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Nandi Senator Samson Charargei, MPs Wilson Kogo (Chesumei), Cornelius Serem (Aldai) and Julius Melly (Tinderet) and area MCA Pius Sing’oei.
