Kenyans will have to dig deep into their pockets to pay for petrol but will have to pay less for both kerosene and diesel.
According to the review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, the current price of super petrol will increase by 5.77 per liter. Those who use both kerosene and diesel have a reason to smile as their prices fall by Sh17.31 and 3.80 per liter respectively.
In the last month, the price of petrol in Nairobi has retailed at Sh83.33.
The price of diesel has dropped from Sh78.37 per liter while kerosene used for lighting and cooking in some households has dropped from Sh79.77 a liter.
“The computation of the pump prices gas taken into consideration the changes effected by the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act of 2020 that made duties and taxes part of the vatable amount in the calculation of VAT for petroleum fuels,” the ERA director-general Pavel Oimele said.
According to Oimele the changes made in June prices are due to the average landed cost of imported super petrol increasing by 31.54 percent from the original $188.70 per cubic meter in April 2020 to $248.21 per cubic meter in May.

“Diesel decreasing by 5.58 percent from $242.13 to $228.62 per cubic meter and Kerosene decreasing by 51.84 percent from $262.44 per cubic meter to $126.39 per cubic meter,” Oimeke said.
During the same period, the mean monthly US Dollar to Kenya Shilling exchange rate appreciated by 0.17 percent from the previous from Sh106.83 per dollar in April to 106.65 in May.
The current change in the pump hasn’t caught many with a shocker as the EPRA had earlier warned against the hoarding of due in anticipation of the price increase.
EPRA has reported an artificial shortage in the Western Kenya region. Other regions to be affected by the shortage also include Nairobi, Mombasa among other towns.
