Health cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called for a special meeting bringing together the National Response Committee to review surging Coronavirus cases.
The meeting is meant to establish why the cases are shooting up and come up with containment measures. Kenya today recorded 972 positive Covid-19 cases from a sample of 6,648 tested in the last 24 hours.
That now brings the total number of cases to 70,245 since the onset of the pandemic in Kenya. To date, the country has tested 789,952 people in total.
With regards to age, the youngest victim was five months old while the oldest one was 91 years old. The men accounted for the majority followed by women at 583 and 389 respectively. Nairobi recorded the most numbers at 378 followed by Kilifi at 139, Mombasa at 42, Nakuru at 31 amongst others.
In addition, the ministry of health stated that 1,229 victims are in hospitals countrywide. Out of that, 59 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of which 30 are on supplemental oxygen while 26 are on ventilatory support. On the other hand, 5,572 are recovering from home.
With regard to recovery, Kagwe reported that 352 had recovered in the last 24 hours. Out of that, 99 were in various hospitals while the other 253 were on home based care. The total recovery now stands at 45,766.

However, the CS expressed his disappointment following the death of four doctors on Saturday. He termed their death unfortunate and a big blow since they are the front soldiers.
As a result, the cabinet secretary made a deliberation that they will enhance the welfare of the health workers in the country. Specifically, they will achieve this by issuing them with protective equipment to protect them from the virus.
