Suna East Member of Parliament, Mohammed Junet is among the 50 MPs who skipped most or all of their committee meeting according to reports.
According to the report compiled by the National Assembly’s 29 committees, 10 MPs skipped all committee meetings between February and October last year.
The remaining legislatures attended once, twice or three times within the same period with most of them appearing in less than half of their parliamentary committee sittings.
Parliament leaders Junet Mohamed (Minority Chief Whip), Aisha Jumwa, and Adan Keynan, who both sit in the Parliamentary Service Commission were among those named in the list of regular absentees.
The outspoken MP and key Raila’s ally surprisingly attended on 19 meetings out of the 97 of the Public Accounts and Investment Committee. Junet skipped the tow panels scheduled by the Selection Committee.
Malindi MP, Aisha Jumwa skipped all the 49 Members Services and facilities Committee meetings, while Keynan attended only four of the 42 meetings of the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee.
The report was tabled in the chamber by the Majority leader Amos Kimunya.
House Committees are seen as the nerve of Parliament as a place where most Housework is done before they are escalated to the floor for debate or adoption.
According to the report the committees held between two and 97 meetings at the time of review.
Apart from Aisha Jumwa who did not appear in any of the meetings the other MPs who joined her in that list are TJ Kajwang and his Makadara counterpart George Aladwa.
TJ Kajwang did no appear in any of the 36 meetings of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee last year while Aladwa skipped all the 74 meetings of the Lands Committee.

- Nicholas Mwale (Butere)

Kimunya warned the MPs that the House leadership would strictly follow the Standing Orders to ensure members attend all the meetings.
“Members have been holding chairmen at ransom that if they report them, they will impeach them from the committees,” he said.
I will now take over that responsibility. I will monitor to ensure if members do not attend four meetings consecutively, they are de-whipped. We already have the temp,” he added.
Other MPs who have a poor record of attending committee meetings include;

Kimunya’s report indicated that the Budget and Appropriation Committee as the committee whose meetings were well attended.
Of the 47 meetings held last year only one member, Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) did not attend at least half of them. Kuria only attended 18 of the sessions.
