Victims of floods living in wetlands within Tana River County will be subjected to a thorough beating before being rescued in future calamities, Tana River Governor Dhadho said.
The governor told the locals that his administration will not continue losing money in rescuing people who continue to defy order to vacate wetlands.
According to the governor, the vacation order was not only issued by the county government but also by the national government hence should be obeyed.
“We will not just head for the usual rescue mission. I urge the county commissioner to equip yourselves with whips. We shall rescue as we whip individuals until they learn to obey directives,” he said.
Governor Godhana noted that his administration spends over Sh2 million every season to rescue and feed flood victims.
He also pointed out losses incurred by the non-government organization to rescue the flood victims. He said the resources will be in the future be used on sustained development.
The governor pointed out that his administration had come up with a cluster program, an idea coined to vacate floods, victims, from wetlands to the high grounds but residents have chosen to ignore and campaign against.

The governor said even though some locals in the affected areas have come up with proposals for where they desire to be settled, others have declined to move and will only seek help once calamity strikes again.
“This cluster program was an Idea to protect you from losses, and I will stand by it to the grave even if you don’t appreciate it. But it’s for you who have been suffering for decades,” he said.
