A woman in Murang’a County is in distress after she was mistakenly reported dead only to bump into villagers who had started planning her burial.
News broke on Monday, November 9, that a woman had committed suicide and killed her son by drowning in Mathioya River.
Villagers immediately spread the news that it was Nancy Wanjiku, who hails from Kambirwa, Kiharu who was accused of having jumped into the river after throwing her youngest son, Franklin Thuku into the water.
Already burial preparations were initiated by the villagers with a number of local leaders giving their condolences to the family’s burial committee.
The local MCA had also sent his condolences and was trying to reach out to the family to provide further financial assistance towards the funeral.
Opening up on the incident, Wanjiku affirmed that she was alive and well and had not contemplated suicide.
She explained that she had heard of the incident of the woman and did not understand why the villagers concluded that it was her.
“I first heard of the rumour from her sister who called me on Monday between 4 and 5 pm to ask her if I had heard that a woman from the area had drowned her son in the local river before jumping to her death,” she recalled.

She later called her sister soon after seeking to know exactly where the victim hailed from and was informed that it was a member of their family.
The following day, while she was going about her errands, people would run away from her with many saying that she was supposed to be dead.
“Whenever I encounter people in the neighborhood, they eye me suspiciously from head to toe and ask if I am really alive, because they were told I died,” she stated.
On his part, the area chief stated that he had heard of the rumors of the murder-suicide in the area but no official report had been made.
