Aisha Jumwa to spend the weekend in cells after failing to raise Sh4m bail

Date:

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa is spending the weekend in police custody after failing to raise Sh4m cash bail and observers are asking why is her boss, DP William Ruto is not assisting her to raise the money.

The Tanga Tanga MP was freed on Ksh.4M cash bail, or a surety of the same amount after spending four nights in the police cells.

Her aide, Geoffrey Otieno has been freed on a Ksh.1m cash bail or a surety of a similar amount.

The legislator and her aide appeared before a Mombasa Court on Friday to answer murder charges.

The two are accused of Gumbao Jola’s murder during the Ganda Ward by-elections last year.

Earlier on Thursday, the MP and her bodyguard failed to take plea in the murder case over a medical report mix-up.

The two had appeared before High Court Judge Njoki Mwangi.

During the session, Judge Mwangi questioned the validity of MP Jumwa’s report as it bore the signature of a psychiatrist not recognized the court.

The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) also failed to produce Mr. Otieno’s medical examination report, forcing the judge defer plea taking for a while.

The court was told that the MP’s medical report had a different signature as the previous psychiatrist had retired, leaving his colleague in charge.

The prosecution sought to have the plea taking proceed, a request that objected to, directing that the missing report be availed before the two are charged.

The two have been in custody since Monday.
